Please welcome author, Linore Rose Burkard to my blog this week. Linore is giving away an e-copy of her YA boxset trilogy if there are ten commenters. So share, share, share! Read below to see how to enter.
When my sweet historical romance series was published, I never dreamed my next would be YA/Apocalyptic. What a switch in genres! So, how
did I go from one end of the writing spectrum to another? Blame it on an idea that refused to die. I read a headline about how close the earth came to suffering a catastrophic electromagnetic pulse, or EMP, in 2012. We missed the worst effects of a solar flare
by a hair (in space terms); but the “what if” factor had been set in motion. What if that flare hadn’t missed us? What if I was a teen raised on electronics–or an adult medically dependent on them–and it all went dead in a matter of seconds? What if the next
flare doesn’t miss? PULSE, the
first book in my PULSE EFFEX Series, was born. Just this week, the box set of the three books that make up The PULSE EFFEX SERIES became available. One winner, chosen by Debbie Lynne, will get a free box set ebook!
GIVEAWAY:
Leave a comment to be entered in the drawing. Tell us whether you like to read suspense or apocalyptic fiction

Part One: Andrea
AGE 16, JANUARY 11
DAY ONE
So my dad got all upset because when he went to leave for work the car went halfway down the driveway and died. His precious Mercedes. I was just walking out to wait for the school
bus and he hurried towards me in a huff, yelling something about how the starter wouldn't even turn over.
"What'd you do to the car, Andrea?" he demanded. I stared at him. I couldn't believe he was trying to pin it on me.
"Nothing."
"What'd you do to it, huh?" he asked again. I turned and stalked blindly down the driveway to wait by the mailbox. My heart was pounding. Normally I'd enjoy the crunch of snow beneath
my boots, and the way the pines lining our driveway are blanketed in white; but I barely noticed either.
Leave it to Dad to ruin my day before it starts...

Vannetta Chapman wrote an apocalyptic series and I read that. I didn't expect to because that isn't my usual genre, but I read an excerpt and became intrigued. That series blew my socks off! Thanks for the chance to win. bcrug(at)twc(dot)com
ReplyDeleteGood luck, Connie!

ReplyDeleteGreat, these should be right up your alley!
DeleteOooh, suspense love it.
ReplyDeleterebunting@yahoo.com
Suspense can be fun, right? The "What happens next?" I put a lot of those at chapter endings.
DeleteI do enjoy a good suspense novel, even though I am partial to historical fiction. This reminds me of a series I read many years ago, but I can't recall the titles or the author at this time. Thanks for the giveaway - will be sharing :)

Thanks, Betti! Debbie Lynne and I both appreciate you sharing.
DeleteApocalyptic fiction is new to me. I haven't read PULSE yet, but I'd definitely give it a try! I love historical fiction, however, and greatly enjoyed Ms. Burkard's historical romance series.

You're an awesome writer!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy reading suspense and especially apocalyptic series. The only thing that turns me away though is not enough character development in some as they tend to move as quickly as possible. If the character development is there alongside the suspense etc. then count me in.
ReplyDeleteSuspense is amazing but i am starting to like steampunk or apocalylptic fiction too.
ReplyDeleteI also love when writers switch genres it can lead to some really interesting reads. This looks like one of those.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy suspense, but haven't lately read any apocalyptic series.
ReplyDeleteI love apocalyptic genres books I cannot get enough. I am addicted.
ReplyDeleteI love suspense! Thank you for the excerpt!
ReplyDeleteI hope I winit!
ReplyDeleteI read alot of suspense but am just getting into apocalyptic type books now to broaden my mind.
ReplyDeleteI love a good suspense novel

Love suspense
ReplyDeleteI often wondered what would happen if electronic things stopped working. It could happen by terrorism, too! I remember a series a while back about the subject. But this would be a newer slant. Now almost all cars rely on electronic systems. Bring back classic cars! But I guess you still need to be able to pump the gas!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the sneak oeak! paulams49ATsbcglobalDOTnet
I love reading suspense
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting book! I like suspense but haven't read much in the apocalyptic genre.
ReplyDeleteI, too, read Vannetta Chapman's series and was totally in to them! I think I would love this! sonja dot nishimoto @ gmail dot com

ReplyDeleteAnonymous 1--Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the regencies, and I hope you'll try the PULSE SERIES. :)
Kassy--Thank you!!
Derek--You're a discerning reader, looking for character development. A number of my reviews mentioned how glad they were to see the girls growing and changing over the course of the books, so I dare to say these will fit your bill! Thanks.
Lisa, I think you're about to discover a new genre you'll enjoy!
Teresa, this series is right up your alley!
Natalya, you're so welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the excerpt!
Chris, good luck!
Unknown 1--I wrote with the idea of educating people as well as entertaining them. The recent hurricane in Florida is a prime example of how things happen that we never expect, and how simple preparations can make a really big difference in the aftermath.
Angie B--Me, too!
Melissa R--Same here.
Paula, this series was intended to answer that very question. What would the world look like if all electronics were to fail? And the terrorism question is addressed in them too. Glad you enjoyed the sneak peek. By the way everyone, say what you will against him, Trump is the first president to take steps (and put money towards) hardening the grid for vital systems in this country. This is MAJORLY good! We CAN protect infrastructure from EMPS and terrorist-caused EMPS and blackouts--but no president has done it until now. It will take time but ANY protection from these threats is better than none.
Unknown 2--you're in the right place! :)
Carmen and Sonja--you're both in for a pleasant surprise and more of what you enjoy!
Anonymous2--good luck!
Alison--good luck to you and to ALL OF YOU!!
Joan--thanks for dropping by though you've already read them.
And if you don't win this drawing, be sure to join or stay on my mailing list for more opportunities coming up.
I enjoy suspense!
ReplyDeleteGreat! Good luck in the drawing!
DeleteI absolutely love her regency series. Looking forward to reading this series!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Gina! I pray it doesn't disappoint!
DeleteI am not a big fan of apocalyptic or suspense novels, but I really am into Romance novels. I heard Shattered Memories is a really good read and I am looking forward to reading it once I can find one. Also, I am looking forward to reading A Perfect Bride as well. Thank you for your amazing writing skills and helping readers all over the world have something new to read around every corner.
ReplyDeleteHello Claire, Thank you so much for the kind words about my books! Linore writes some stories you may enjoy, too. She has a series of regencies you may enjoy. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI'm not really into apocalypic fiction because I'm really helped by beauty and nature (since I've been through a lot in my life!). However, if romance is a big part and there is plenty of uplifting/heartwarming moments I am open to it. I did read the Hunger Games, for instance. I occasionally read clean romantic suspense (in fact Annette K Larsen's If I Could Stay is one of my favourite books!! :) ).
ReplyDeleteThere is downtime and warm moments--even cosy--but always in the background you know the "new normal" is there to stay and with it comes a certain degree of suspense. If you prefer warm and sweet, try my regencies! (http://amzn.to/2H7eTLI is the first in the series.) Thanks!
DeleteLoved the excerpt. Can't wait to read book
ReplyDeleteThanks, Donna!
DeleteThis sounds like an exciting series!

DeleteThank you, Lucy!
DeleteI love apocalyptic series, the ones without zombies are best, but I've read both. Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteNo zombies in my books. (I call zombies "pagan wishful thinking"--because it's sort of an afterlife that completely ignores that the judgment of God happens after death. Not "zombie-ism.")
DeleteSounds like a great series to read. I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Anonymous!
DeleteI love it when we venture beyond our comfort zones! Looking forward to the book. dsks88 (at ) gmail ( dot ) com
ReplyDeleteFunny you should say that, Sandy, because the whole series is about life completely out of our comfort zones! Thanks for your openness!
DeleteI like reading suspense.
ReplyDeleteGreat, thanks, Kai!
DeleteFabulous excerpt! I enjoy suspense!
